BTC Celebrates 40 Years of Changing Lives

September 5th, 2008

(PITTSBURGH) – In celebration of Bidwell Training Center’s 40th Anniversary, a series of events will be held commemorating the organization’s rich history, culture and accomplishments.

The inaugural event is scheduled for the evening of Wednesday, September 24, when Bill Strickland and the Manchester Bidwell Corporation’s (MBC) Board of Directors will host an invitation-only homecoming event, highlighting the milestones of Bidwell Training Center. Guests will enjoy music, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres as they experience a lighthearted glimpse at BTC’s rich history. Presentations by Bill Strickland and Reverend Jimmy Joe Robinson, along with a video featuring reflections by friends of the organization, will accentuate the evening. The finale will be the unveiling of a special tribute to the community, in honor of those who have contributed so much to the success of Bidwell Training Center. A coffee and dessert reception will close the evening for more than 400 invited guests that will include Bidwell Training Center Advisory Board Members, corporate and community employers, civic leaders, donors, alumni and staff.

A second event will follow on Thursday, September 25, and will consist of a luncheon tribute for 200 of Bidwell Training Center’s students, faculty and staff to share in this historic celebration.

On Monday, January 19, 2009, a community exhibition will open to coincide with Martin Luther King Day, in conjunction with a day of volunteer service sponsored by Pittsburgh Cares. In addition to the community tribute, a historic collection of photos and articles spanning Bidwell’s 40 years will be on view. Tours of the exhibits will be augmented by MBC’s permanent collection of civil rights era photographs featuring Martin Luther King, Jr. Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.

“I recently celebrated my 27th anniversary at Bidwell, and have never been more proud to be a part of such a remarkable institution,” said Valerie Njie, VP at Bidwell Training Center. “Researching Bidwell’s history has left me with increased respect and awe of the dedication, commitment, and foresight of the individuals who sacrificed everything to improve their community. We really have changed many lives.”

While on exhibit at MBC, it is anticipated that the community tribute and photo exhibits will be seen by thousands of on-site visitors and jazz concert attendees. The exhibits will then travel to other Pittsburgh cultural venues.
