Chihuly-Designed “Olympia” Piano Makes a Stop at MCG Jazz This Weekend!

September 24th, 2007

September 24, 2007, Pittsburgh, PA – The Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild will be host to a Dale Chihuly-designed Steinway piano September 27 through October 1, 2007, when it will make a stop in the Guild’s Kerr Gallery. The Gallery is located at 1815 Metropolitan Street inside the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, which opens its season of live jazz performance with legends James Moody and Jimmy Scott this weekend.

MCG Jazz Executive Producer Marty Ashby says, “Partnering with the Pittsburgh Celebrates Glass! team to display such a one-of-a-kind instrument was a natural choice and a great opportunity for MCG Jazz. What better way to kick off our 21st season of live jazz than by celebrating creativity by presenting this great music alongside the beauty of this original piece of glass craftsmanship by Chihuly.”

The piano will be on view during the following hours:

Sept. 27 : 9am-5pm or after 6:30pm with concert ticket
Sept. 28 : 9am-5pm or after 7pm with concert ticket
Sept. 29 : 6pm-10pm with concert ticket only
Sept. 30 : 1pm-5pm with concert ticket only
Oct. 1 : 9am-5pm

This 9-foot Steinway concert grand piano is called “Olympia ,” and is a vivid green color with orange and yellow keys. The piano’s most extraordinary features include a clear glass piano desk, and a translucent glass top, the first ever designed for a Steinway piano.

Olympia was unveiled at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , and only a handful of pianos of its type have been produced. According to Trombino Piano Gallery, who helped plan the Steinway’s visit to MCG, along with being a visually stunning instrument, it is also one of the finest pianos in the world.
