Manchester Bidwell’s Annual Campaign Kickoff Celebrates Mentorship

April 25th, 2006

(PITTSBURGH): A salute to the relationships that are created between teachers and students at Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild and Bidwell Training Center will highlight Manchester Bidwell Corporation’s Celebration of Mentorship on Tuesday, April 25th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

One of the most valuable experiences a student can have is exposure to a mentor who is willing to share values, interests, time, talents and skills. When the mentor is a good match for the student, the relationship can provide encouragement, inspiration and new insights. Its purpose is to transform lives.

Jake Ploeger from WTAE-TV will host the event as emcee, and Manchester Bidwell President and CEO Bill Strickland will present his own story about the transformation that took place when he met high school art teacher Frank Ross. Mr. Strickland is just one example of how students from disadvantaged populations see their self-confidence and aspirations raised to new heights as a mentor relationship grows and develops. In addition, former students Jenn Peters (MCG) and Jack Forsythe (BTC) along with their mentors Josh Green (MCG) and Josifani Moyo (BTC) will share personal stories about how their mentor relationships have provided a foundation for their academic achievement and professional advancement.

Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild was established to help combat the economic deprivation experienced by the predominantly African American neighborhood of Manchester. MCG Youth, MCG Arts and MCG Jazz are all programs of the Guild. Bidwell Training Center gives students a chance to succeed in the workforce by providing career education created through strong partnerships with leading local companies.

As it moves into its 38th year of operation, Manchester Bidwell Corporation has evolved into a national model for empowerment. The Celebration of Mentorship encourages support for this invaluable economic and cultural resource to the Pittsburgh community and surrounding region.
